The Other Side Village is a master-planned neighborhood that provides affordable, permanent quality housing for people coming out of chronic homelessness. The Village is founded on the conviction that housing alone will never solve homelessness, but community will. The combination of high-quality, permanent housing and a strong culture of personal growth, support, and connection is the heart of their model. It is not about tiny homes. You’ll notice that the residents will live in small homes, yes. But the size of the homes are the least important part of this effort. The key is not the physical structures, but the social system. The primary ingredient for success is creating a strong culture that lifts and changes all who are part of it.
The Other Side Village is working with Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, the Mayor’s Office, the City Council, and the Planning Commission to find an appropriate place to build the village. They have done significant research, feasibility studies, and 3rd party site testing and determined that a site on Indiana Avenue in Salt Lake City would fit their needs. In their search we looked East, West, North and South. The Indiana Avenue parcel was one of the very few large enough.
Every possible property was evaluated :
Close enough to downtown
Can’t remove green space
Can’t be in airport overlay
Must be large enough to house 430 homes and community buildings
Utilities must be readily available
Must have good access to UTA
Room for social enterprises and community amenities
HomeAid Utah is committed to working with non-profit providers of services for our friends experiencing homelessness. Their unique position as a charitable associate of the Salt Lake Home Builders Association gives them the opportunity to bridge the homebuilding industry to worthy projects in a way that saves providers significantly on their rehab and construction projects. This gives the home building industry a targeted way to give back and the service providers save their valuable operating capital for direct client services.
HomeAid Utah has committed to building the first tiny home sub-village at The Other Side Village. This will consist of 10-15 tiny homes. We will do so with the utilization of relationships within the building community. Once launched and operating, The Other Side Village will reach self-sufficiency to cover its operational expenses through the revenues generated from its social enterprises, so they do not have to be reliant upon ongoing donations or operating funds for donations.
